An engaging thought provoking film
27 October 2012 | by Karan Talwar (India) – See all my reviews

Bikas Bhagat, in a review in Zee News, gives the movie four stars out of five and says the movie is balanced in the way it tackles something as complex as Naxalism.

While he says that "the story has nothing much," he lauds the actors for "bringing authenticity by justifying the characters that they have been casted in and by gelling with the theme of the film so well."

He writes that the "real find of the film is the femme fatale character of Juhi the rebel played by Anjali Patil."

Mr. Bhagat said he enjoyed the music, which is by Salim-Sulaiman, Aadesh Shrivastava and Shantanu Moitra.

"They have done a fantastic job of keeping the audience involved with the story. Songs of the film are completely in sync with the mood of the film. 'Mehangaai' stands out," he writes.

Overall, he says that it "would be a big mistake" to give "Chakravyuh a miss."

A review by Subhash K. Jha on IANS also gives the movie four stars.

He calls it Mr. Jha's "most resolutely etched and firmly grounded drama since Mrityudand, and a work way superior to his last two films – Raajneeti and Aarakshan."

Mr. Jha writes that the director "is in full command of his wide-angled canvas," and culls his research on the red corridor in a "condensed but brightly illuminated screenplay."

He also praises the closing sequence of the movie: "Thanks to the brilliantly-written words and the restrain with which the two actors put their viewpoints forward, the sequence scorches the screen."

Mr. Jha "only shows us glimpses into his characters' hearts before pulling back ruthlessly to allow them to go about their jobs as professionals who have to travel far beyond their call of duty," notes the reviewer. He argues that the movie should have been longer to explore the relationship and emotions between Mr. Deol and Mr. Rampal as well as Ms. Patil.

He ends by writing that "the process of social awakening that started with the cinema of V. Shantaram and B.R. Chopra has come a full circle," with "Chakravyuh."

In a review in The Times of India, Meena Iyer gives the movie three-and-a-half stars out of five.

She praises Mr. Jha for choosing to make a film on Naxalism and "for sticking his neck out."

For Ms. Iyer, "the personal and professional equations" between Mr. Rampal and Mr. Deol "make for a compelling film with some rock-solid emotions."

She writes that Mr. Jha "must also be complimented for the scale and performances he has extracted from his lead cast." She finds Mr. Bajpai, Mr. Deol and Mr. Rampal "compelling." "Esha starts on a shrill note but improves later," she notes.

A political thriller told in a simple earthy manner. Chilling.
8 June 2012 | by madhupill2002-156-591749 – See all my reviews

"Until and unless you step out of your comfort zone and try something new, no new grounds will be broken, no new films will be launched, no new stars will be discovered, people won't get to see new stories and our industry will not be injected with new blood," director Dibakar Banerjee recently said.

With his latest film – "Shanghai," a political thriller - he appears to be staying true to his words.

With "Shanghai," which releases today, Mr. Banerjee takes an offbeat look at the drama of coalition politics and bureaucracy in India, featuring actors Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin in lead roles.

Set in a fictional city called Bharatnagar –set to become the "next Shanghai" as a redevelopment project kicks off – the film starts off with the murder of a social activist who had been opposing the project. The film is an adaptation of Greek novel "Z" by writer Vassilis Vassilikos.

A high-ranking bureaucrat, played by Mr. Deol, is put in charge of the investigation and a local videographer, interpreted by Mr. Hashmi, claims to have key evidence to resolve the case.

Mr. Banerjee has for long been synonymous with films that tackle big issues without being  overly preachy. There's the 2006 comedy drama "Khosla Ka Ghosla," about one family's struggle to get their land back from a property shark, or the well-crafted black comedy about a super thief in his 2008 film "Oye Lucky Lucky Oye."  Then, with his 2010 film "Love Sex Aur Dhokha" –shot entirely on a digicam – he turned to the subject of voyeurism, honor killings and sting operations.

May be one time watch for some but far away from being super cool.
23 August 2012 | by bobbysing (India) – See all my reviews

When it comes to Indian films then making a Sex Comedy is still quite a difficult task due to the dual mindset prevalent in our society. Here at one end the 'generation now' can see just anything on their electronic gadgets at their will and on the other we are still forced to make & see films which are supposed to be Sex Comedies, without any sex in the real sense due to the strict censors ready with their scissors.

As a result, what you really get to see in KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM is a collage of suggestive scenes and double meaning dialogues where one wants to say the exact words, wishes to show some sexual content but cannot do so due to the Censor Board. In other words, the process of making films under this genre in our part of the world is just like studying the subject of PHYSICS or CHEMISTRY without having the permission to use the LABAROTARIES. Further, it all really seems to be utterly childish if you are an avid fan of Western or World Cinema and have seen some famous movies made in this particular genre.

So KSKHH can easily be called a desperate or forcible effort (made within the fixed framework of some strange restrictions and limitations), which tries its best to make you laugh occasionally. The funny moments are there in bits & parts, but that too only in its second half where the film picks up for a few minutes and then slides down again. The enjoyable scenes in the film are so hard to find that one cannot really call it a great attempt at all. The first half fails to make any kind of impact on the viewers in absence of an exciting script as compared to its unrelated "Kya Kool Hain Hum"released in 2005. Plus after making a decent start post intermission, the narration suddenly starts dragging due to its over-length, avoidable songs and a completely hushed up, pathetic climax. Hence if you are expecting a great laugh riot made on the lines of its Part One, then you are sure going to be disappointed hugely.

Honestly speaking, its really a difficult task to make the viewers enjoy a Sex-Comedy supported only by its double meaning dialogues (using the mute button at times), a few comic sequences and some fine performances, minus the Sex. As mentioned above its like making a body stand without any spine in it. The art was perfectly mastered byDADA KONDKE in the 70s-80s and till date no-one has ever achieved that kind of excellence in this genre in Indian Cinema. To say the truth, the moment anyone else tries to do the same, it all becomes completely class-less, weird and indigestible in a bizarre manner.

Putting it differently, KSKHH can also be described as just another unsuccessful attempt to create a SEX COMEDY genre in our Indian Cinema, where we still have to deal with the kind of CENSORS who think that even the vote casting ADULTS in our country are not supposed to hear the four letter word starting with F in the theater. The fact seriously makes me think about the actual age we really become Adults according to the authorities. Moreover here we have CENSORS who can readily pass a film like DELHI BELLY with hugely vulgar dialogues and contradicting themselves, can ask the other producers to mute the exactly similar words in their small films. Therefore, even though KSKHH does manage to hit you hard below the belt at times through its wacky one liners, still it cannot exactly be called a SEX COMEDY film as made in the other parts of the world.

Coming to its performances, both Riteish and Tusshar are complete natural when it comes to these kinds of roles, still I couldn't find anything new in their portrayal this time. They play it quite similar to what we have already seen in all their previous comedies. In the female lead, Neha Sharma looks great and acts well too but Sarah Jane Dias's effort is clearly visible and she also needs the support of her great outfits to look good on the screen. Anupam Kher gets wasted in a half- heartedly written role and Chunky Pandey fails to generate any spark. Rohit Shetty (the famous director of Singham & Golamaal series) makes an uninspiring cameo in the film but Razzak Khan shines with his most effective lines, capable of generating a good noise in the theaters.

Director Sachin Yardi handles few sequences well, particularly in the second half, but he surely could have gone for a decent storyline to support his talented dialogue writers. At times I also felt that he gave too much attention to the Pug (dog) in the film which could have been replaced by some entertaining scenes in the script. In the technical department, Cinematography and Background score doesn't give you anything special to write about. However the soundtrack of KSKHH scores some decent marks due to its peppy party tracks namely "Dil Garden Garden", "Volume High Karle" & "UP Bihar" redone version.

To conclude, KYA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM may appeal only to the viewers who wish to hear some crazy double meaning dialogues alone in this supposedly called SEX COMEDY. But if you don't find what you were looking for in it, then simply blame the questionable standards followed by our CENSORS more than its makers.

Trivia
Since the head of a housefly is made up almost entirely of eye and very little muscle, conveying emotion as the fly was extremely difficult. To overcome this, S.S. Rajamouli used body language - they made Nani cover his head completely in cloth and asked him to perform various emotions just through body language. This data was given to the animation team who then created all the movements and body language for the fly. See more »

Bow to Rajamouli
7 July 2012 | by NoReasonToLive (Hyderabad, India) – See all my reviews

Elements like the below are an icing on the cake : 1. Eega doing its best to prevent Sudeep from getting intimate with Bindu.

2. Eega's teasing gestures to Sudeep, which is funny and also lends an aura of heroism around the fly.

3. Eega's song where it challenges Sudeep is not only well-placed but also an integral part of the film.

4. The character of Bindu being made a part of Eega's plot is superb. Kicha Sudeep's performance in Eega is getting rave reviews from various quarters. With his wonderful acting, the actor has won the hearts of the audience. However, his fan followers from Karnataka had one more reason to be thrilled
